Thirty Year Thursday: Edward Fechtel

To celebrate our thirtieth year anniversary, we’re interviewing a friend of Midtown Assistance Center each Thursday as part of a series call “Thirty Year Thursday.” This week, we interviewed Edward Fechtel, food pantry volunteer at MAC.

How did you first hear about MAC?

I started volunteering at MAC around three years ago. I called United Way 211 to find out about volunteer opportunities, and they gave me MAC’s number. I came in and talked with Rebecca, and we decided that I would volunteer in the pantry. That’s what I’ve been doing ever since.

What initially drew you to start volunteering?

I wanted something to do in the morning, and I knew I wanted to volunteer my time at least a few hours a week. This volunteer position fit perfectly.

What has kept you volunteering at MAC?

Like I said, it is a great thing to do in the morning. I am also part of a church volunteer group, Legion of Mary, and my volunteer hours here fit well into the work I do with them.

How has your experience at MAC influenced you?

I have been influenced by the people who work here. Everyone is very nice. I can’t think of one specific individual. It’s the combination of people working and volunteering here that makes MAC great.

Do you have a favorite moment from your time at MAC?

I always like meeting and speaking with different people. One time a volunteer group of young adults came in to help stock the pantry, and I enjoyed getting to talk and work with them. I also enjoy talking with Hassan in the clothes closet and the other MAC volunteers.
